Dining out is one of the first things to get cut from the family budget in tough times. But even if you're tightening your belt, you can still find some bargain eats out there. Consumer Reports magazine offers the following tips to get the most bang for your buck when hitting a neighborhood eatery.Look for bargains on the menu. Many places offer buy-one-get one-free appetizers and entrees, or all-you-can-eat specials. And ask about getting a half-portion for a lower price. Sign up for E-mail alerts Show your age Time your visit. Order takeout. Don't forget the Eagle's half off Sacramento deals! Getting food to go at least saves the cost of a tip, and the list of chains accepting online and telephone orders is growing. So are the ranks of those allowing curbside pickup. A lot of eateries offer specials on weekdays and at off-peak hours. . Many family chains have reduced-price menus for kids under age 10 or 12 and seniors over 55. If you reveal your birthday, some chains are particularly generous. . Chain websites are a great source of menu specials, discounts and other promotions. Plug in your E-mail address and the coupons will roll in.
