Beatles album covers

16491-lgA series of illustrations commissioned for but never used on a Beatles album goes up for bids this week. The Los Angeles Times reports the five pieces -- depicting toothbrushes tabbed with the names of each Beatle and a fifth showing all four brushes in a cup -- were created by artist Jim Dine. They were done for Capitol Records, which expected to release a Beatles L-P in the fall of '68 -- before the band took greater control of their career and formed Apple Records. Though Capitol still distributed the album, it no longer had final say over the cover art. The artwork wound up in the personal collection of label executive Sal Iannucci and his wife. Of course, The Beatles did release an album in late 1968 -- the so-called White Album, which carried no cover art at all. --
