Stairway Concert

This Sunday at high noon at the Crest Theater, 21 bands will hit the stage for the annual Stairway to Stardom Concert, brought to you by Skip's Music.  It's my privilege to MC the festivities once again this year. The Stairway program, now in its 31st year, is an amazing music experience/education for the dozens of teenagers involved.  Larisa Bryski is the Stairway coordinator, and she & the staff of coaches & mentors work with these folks for 8 weeks during the summer.  They form bands, and help them write 3 original songs, which the band will perform on the stage in the "final concert" this Sunday, in front of a live crowd.  The concert is open to the public, with tix $10 each and available at tickets.com or any Skip's Music location.  --I've seen some outstanding young musicians over the years..and even those who weren't so--uh, "musically precocious"--still had a great time with the experience.  Pictured..the concert a coupla years ago, at the Holiday Inn...with the band Road Rage (this, with band members who couldn't even DRIVE yet). **photo by Kevin Graft**

You Can't Handle the TOOTH

Seems even the Tooth Fairy is feeling the economic pinch.  According to a recent survey of kids, the national average for a lost tooth is $2.60, down from 3 bucks just a coupla years ago.  Children living on the West Coast are the Tooth Fairy's favorites, with the average being $2.80--a bit more for front teeth & molars.  --I lost a tooth a coupla years ago...the Tooth Fairy brought ME a new implant--AND a $ 1500 dental bill.  That took a bite outta my budget. OUCH!  **(photo by patrikpaprika)

Happy Birthday, America!

You know the 4th is just around the corner when you see the TNT Fireworks stands popping up in the neighborhood.  Legal fireworks are NOW on sale..until July 4th.  What's cool about the TNT Fireworks stands, is that they're great fund-raisers for so many local groups in our community--helping everything from Little League teams, to school band programs.  This year, TNT has introduced a number of new products...with my personal favorite being Star Voyager. Combine that with Delirium, and you've got a tremendous grand finale for your neighborhood celebration!  Plus, TNT has a chance for ya to win a new truck, and free fireworks.  Find out more at www.tntfireworks.com.

Fancy Fiddle

A Stradivarius violin built in 1721 sold this week at auction for almost $ 16 million. The violin--which has rarely been played--is called "Lady Blunt"...which sounds like it would be perfect to play a hemp-friendly song like, say, "Mary Jane's Last Dance."  Lady Blunt had been owned by a Japanese music foundation, who decided to sell the instrument, and use the proceeds for tsunami relief in Japan.   Now, I don't play fiddle, but have fiddled around  on a guitar for the last 42 some odd years...so I appreciate the value of a fine instrument, and know that they are indeed works of art.  BUT....for 16 mil ??   --I'd rather buy a coupla REALLY nice guitars, and then have $$ left over to buy sumpin' else--maybe my own small island in the South Pacific, for example.       --photo by dumbledad's photostream--

Golf at the Ridge

Lookin' down the 10th fairway at the Ridge Golf Course in Auburn, flanked by my buddies Brian Wertenberger and Scott Runkle.  Beautiful course--tough course!  You miss the fairway by a few yards, and you might be in rattlesnake country.  And the greens can be fast & devious as well....pegging my stimpmeter.  Are you up for the challenge?? Save some money this week on golf at the Ridge with the Sac Perks offer at www.eagle969.com.  Get a $50 certificate for just 25 bucks..great idea for a Father's Day gift. --side note...I've only witnessed ONE hole-in-one (so far)..and it happened on the par 3 17th at the Ridge--classic par 3, elevated tee, peninsula green, with water right...--AND I came within 3 inches of a hole-in-one myself a few years ago, during the Eagle's SipItGripItRipIt tournament, on the par 3 12th.  I'm destined to get an ace at the Ridge.....!

Stairway to Stardom

So...summer's here..and the kids (or grandkids) are home from high school...and BORED.  What to do? Well, if they are interested in music, get 'em involved in Stairway to Stardom.   Skip's Music has presented this 8 week program every year for the last 3 decades.  The students form bands, write 3 original songs, and will perform those tunes this year in front of a crowd in a concert setting at the Crest Theater Aug 14.  Then, they'll record in a local professional studio. It's like Future Farmers of America...for budding rock stars! MS Golf Experience

..hangin' with my 4 some today...Richard Crozier, Bob Klint, me, and Mark Sheefel..on the 19th hole, after a fine afternoon  of flog ("golf" backwards) at Timber Creek GC, Sun City Roseville.  The course was pristine, we hit some shots,  lost some balls--all for a good cause.  Proceeds benefitted Terry's Closet, which helps folks affected by Multiple Sclerosis  (in honor of Terry Rossman, who lost her life to MS in 2007).  Hope to play again next year...details at www.msgolfexperience.com.   Fore...!

Concert in the Quad

..happens this Sunday afternoon 3 - 7 pm, at Buljan Middle School in Roseville--7 bands for just 5 bucks.  Proceeds benefit WoodShop Rocks, a program I've raved about for the last few years.  Duane Calkins (pictured, with pro angler Skeet Reese, holding the ax) is the mastermind of WoodShop Rocks.  Each year, dozens of students at Buljan look forward to woodshop class-because their project is to build a guitar!  But the materials for the class  cost a few bucks..that's where Concert in the Quad comes in.  The concert raises funds to help purchase the raw materials for the class.  --and to think, I built a bookshelf in my Jr High woodshop class.  The students do a remarkable job on the guitars ..check out the gallery at www.woodshoprocks.com.   The program has spread to almost a dozen other schools in the area, and even outside the state.  What a concept...students getting excited about school..and making something they can use even after they graduate.  Woodshop Rocks!!  Check the concert line-up, get more details at the website.

When the Levee Breaks...

You probably know the Led Zep song..which was actually written & recorded in 1929 by early blues diva Memphis Minnie..about the horrific floods of 1927 that killed hundreds of people in the Memphis area.  Now, decades later, the waters of the mighty Miss-i-sip have risen to the same height of those floods...14 feet above flood stage.  The river should crest tonite (5/9) in the Memphis area.  Thousands of folks have been evacuated from their homes. Many others are downtown gawking at the now 3 MILE wide river (normally an impressive half-mile wide). The levees should do their job THIS time holding back the Mississippi..but the danger comes from the rising waters of the tributaries that feed the river.  Thankfully, my kin-folk are NOT threatened this time..but my thoughts & prayers are with those who will feel the wrath of the muddy river.  --also curious to note..looking at the skyline of Memphis..how there is a pyramid on THEIR river, just like we have in Sacramento.  Lots of similarities between my place of birth, and my current home...

..maybe you can ride up to Buffalo Chip, South Dakota for the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. It happens Aug 6-13 this year, and there's a killer concert line-up...including Def Leppard, Tesla, Thorogood, Skynyrd, and more.  --It was at this show a coupla years ago that Steven Tyler fell off the stage and broke his shoulder.  I heard from a reliable source (who was standing by the stage) that it looked like Joe Perry PUSHED Tyler off...but I think they've made amends since then.  In any case...if YOU do go to Sturgis--DON'T fall off the stage.   **photo from Wikipedia

We're not in Kansas anymore..ARE WE??

A tornado was spotted today in Colusa County, along I-5, north of the Sutter Buttes--wouldn't be surprised if more popped up, with all the wild weather we've been experiencing here in NorCal.  My first awareness of the beautiful, brutal power of a tornado came from...The Wizard of Oz (!)   But as a kid in Memphis, I lived in a "tornado alley"--several times a year, funnel clouds would rip thru the area.  Then, when I was 12, a tornado came within a coupla blocks from my house.  Not a major one (probably F1)...but it ripped the shingles off our roof, and knocked down trees in the neighborhood.  I vividly recall the angry sky that day, the black line of clouds on the horizon, with the finger of a funnel dropping towards earth--before my mother shouted to me to come inside for shelter.  I've been fascinated ever since...and have recurring dreams/nightmares about tornadoes.  Is my inner being so stormy? Or am I just jolted by a force of nature, that seems to meander lazily, as it creates a random path of destruction?  Either way, you probably don't wanna stand too close to me in a storm.  I'll tell you my experiences with LIGHTNING someday....--(image from OAR/NSSL)

Wine nut...!

Yes, I admit..I AM...but "wine nut" is also the translation of "Vino Noceto"--another excellent Amador County winery.  Here, in the Vino Noceto tasting room, staff member Melanie Brown pours me another savory sample.  This was taken last Sunday, during the Behind the Cellar Door event...but the tasting room is open year-round.  Vino Noceto specializes in Sangiovese (which is the basis for Italian Chianti)...and they also have a coupla my other faves, Zinfandel & Barbera. If you haven't visited the Shenandoah-Steiner Road "loop" outside of Plymouth, I heartily recommend you make a day of it soon...buon gusto!

Talkin bout China Grove

China Grove, Tennessee, that is..!--which--I learned recently--is where my maternal grandmother's family settled in the mid 1800's. Here's a picture of them from a century ago (circa 1908)...my grandmom is the 9 yr old girl in the center...in front of their house on...China Grove Road!  The town is about halfway between Memphis & Nashville. I asked my mom why she hadn't told me this earlier...I mean, haven't you heard of the DOOBIE BROTHERS?? And she said.."Well, son, I don't think we're related to the Doobie family." Don't believe the sheriff had a samurai sword, either....

Oscar Odds

The Oscars are the most gambled-on NON-sporting event in the U.S. (besides presidential elections every 4 yrs).  But this year...no real surprises are expected, so the odds are LOPSDIDED.  "The King's Speech" is a 2-9 favorite to win Best Picture...Natalie Portman is 1-12 fave for Best Actress...and Christian Bale is practically a lock at 1-7 odds to win Best Supporting Actor.  Odds are also good that I will watch less than 20 minutes of the show..just hard for me to handle much longer in these types of award shows. May I have the envelope please...or the remote control, even better.

Gray Lodge

Cyber hoarder

..is defined by the Urban Dictionary as "someone who has an EXCESSIVE amount of word documents, pictures, etc., saved on their computer that they will NEVER look at."  -- At least on your computer, files are ORGANIZED, so you can FIND a specific item fairly quickly. And the only danger is crashing your hard drive, not getting crushed beneath a heap of rotting garbage that's accumulated in your kitchen. --I admit that I'm a bit of a hoarder, cyber & otherwise. Not hoarding animals...that's a WHOLE nother psychological issue.  But if you look in my garage, or closets, there's a lot of stuff I haven't used or worn since the Reagan administration.   There's the idea (growing out of the Depression era) that this STUFF is still useful... and as soon as I throw something out, I'll find that I DID really need it. Then there's a SENTIMENTAL side as well..."Aw,look... my mom gave this to me when I graduated kindergarten." --But you KNOW it's time for a yard sale or a city dump run....when the appliances you're storing begin to flow out onto your lawn.

The big guy offers cash prizes to entice 20-25 employees from our 6 radio stations to dress up...and he lures spectators with free lunch from Texas West BBQ...and theme desserts (think "kitty litter" cake..) Last year, I helped Teresa--(pictured,our front desk reception queen)--with a soundtrack...yes, she was a BILL, and she WON..some bills.   This year, I'm also providing Van Halen's "Jump" as a soundtrack, but I won't reveal her costume.  She'll have some tough competition, rumor is...but it probably won't be as STRANGE as the time John Entwhistle from the Who joined us for our Halloween BBQ...ask Keller about that one.

Charlie's Choice: # 11 @Mather Golf Course

One of the hints to reading greens at Mather is...everything breaks toward the runway.  And in the heyday of Mather AFB, those runways were busy with aircraft of all sizes--including the massive B52 & KC135.  These days, the airspace is more tranquil, as is the golf course...it's like a nature preserve, with lots of birds--hawks, owls, ducks, and of course, GEESE.  Quite often, at the 143 yd par 3 # 11 (pictured) it sounds like the waterfowl are taunting me as I tee off. Just don't HONK in my backswing... The course is usually in excellent shape, water doesn't come into play very often, and you can often play an errant drive from the other fairway.  But look out if you play from the tips..it is LONG.

Wines That Rock...

Add the Police to the list of artists with their own wine. Wines That Rock has introduced the Police Synchronicity--a red blend that joins the Rolling Stones Forty Licks Merlot, and the Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon Cabernet Sauvignon.  Mark Beaman is the winemaker at Mendocino Wine Co, which markets these wines..talk about a cool job!-He listens to music, and then puts together a bottle of wine that captures the "essence" of an album.  Altho I think for the Police...a good Zin-chronicity would have worked...or how bout the Regatta de Blanc Sauvignon Blanc??  Find out more about the "Official Wines of Rock n Roll" at www.wines-that-rock.com.

Halloween candy...

My local Raley's put Halloween candy on the shelf last week, and I bought a few bags on sale. Problem is, now I've EATEN half that candy...and it's still 3 weeks til Halloween!  I buy it too early, I eat it--wait too late, and all that's left is the crappy candy that even the kids won't take. And Halloween is on a Sunday this year, so I'll have to resist sugar temptations during the football games, waiting on trick-or-treaters.  --side note..when I run out of candy, I pass out pennies to the kids...they seem to like getting money, and it's not like these lil butterballs need the calories....

Please "bear" with me...

He may or may not be "smarter than the average bear"...but this bear took a Toyota for a test drive a few days ago. At 3 a.m., folks in Larkspur,Colorado called police after hearing a horn honking for 45 minutes.  Apparently, Ralph Story, the 17 yr old owner of the car, had left a peanut butter sandwich in the back seat.  Attracted by the scent..of the "picnic-a basket" {Yogi bear accent}..the hungry bear broke into the vehicle..the door closed behind him...he panicked..thrashed around..knocked the shifter into Neutral..the car rolled down a hill & into a ditch.  All the while, the bear was honking the horn, and had activated the flasher lights. "It was like he knew what was going on, & he kept hitting the horn," said the Sheriff.

Sac's Beer Pong champions

A 2 man team from Sacramento won the World Beer Pong tournament last week in Atlantic City, NJ.  Seriously. The team--named Sacramento's Drinkin' Smokin' Straight West Coastin'--beat out hundreds of teams, and picked up      $ 25,000 in prize money for their efforts.  Like many folks, I "learned" to play beer pong at college.."practicing" a bit too often. But I didn't realize I could go PRO!!  To their credit...the championship is actually played with WATER  filled cups, not beer. But I always felt that was part of the challenge, being accurate with my shots after--well, a coupla SHOTS.  In my college daze, we played a variation called BLOW PONG..that involved teams getting on their knees, surrounding the pong table, and using only their breath...manipulating the ball.  If it fell off the table on your side, all your team members took a swig.  Always fun to see who would hyperventilate & pass out first...ah, the things we learn at college.

Youth groups, sports teams, church groups--you help them out when you buy from a TNT stand.  And lighting them off (safely) on July 4 is an impressive way to celebrate our freedom!  I'll be out at a TNT stand 6 to 7 pm on Wednesday, June 30..giving ya deals on fireworks, serving up *free*tasty* Parker's Hot Dogs..and giving away stuff.  Listen for details...

So to Speak....

"Just livin' the dream." -- I'm hearing this response more & more when I ask folks-- "How ya doin?" -- It's certainly more creative than the non-answer.."OK..how are YOU?"   Why is THIS phrase becoming so popular among the masses??   Maybe it reflects a general resignation...sure, the American Dream CAN be real, compared to the typical miserable existence the majority of Earthlings in other countries endure. BUT...some of those utopian promises seem to ring hollow, as we trudge along in our mundane 9-5 lives.  "Livin' the dream", with a bitter smile..yeah, things are OK..but dammit!...it SURE could be BETTER.

Teal Bend Big Game Scramble

IMG_0060It was a Super Sunday yesterday at Teal Bend Golf Course, as they hosted the annual Big Game scramble. My fellow "team mates" (pictured) were course superintendent John Farley...Eagle staffer Doug Thomas (ever the Charger fan)..and James Patty (the infamous J.P.).   The par 3   #9  requires a tee shot over the lake...and quite often, I wish I had packed a snorkel in my golf bag.  At certain points in the round, teams had a chance to IMG_0062toss a football at a target, or kick a field goal, to shave strokes off the total score.  Farley splits the uprights on his kick...and also split the bunkers on the treacherous #17 tee shot over the other lake.  FUN TIME...!  Check out Teal Bend for other creative tournaments...like Hook, Line, and Sink It..which requires fishin' skills..and the Valentines Day couples event this weekend.

Howl at the Wolf Moon

WolfMoonThe Wolf Moon will rise in the sky tonite (Friday)..and  it will be the brightest full moon of 2010.  Hopefully we'll be able to see it thru the clouds!  The Wolf Moon--the first full moon of each year-- is so named because of a Native American idea that hungry wolves howled at this moon on cold winter nites.  This full moon will be about 30 % brighter than others this year, because it will happen at perigee--the point in its orbit where the moon is closest to earth.  As an added bonus, Mars will be right next to it--look for the reddish object just left of the moon.   I take it as an omen that Pink Floyd will win the Superbrawl...or does the Dark Side of the Moon mean that they'll LOSE??  Feel free to howl at the moon tonite, either way...

How cold WAS it...?

601px-Iguana_Florida_KeysCold enough to "freeze your iguana"...literally!  The frigid arctic air that has frozen the Deep South is not only threatening orange crops, but also paralyzing iguanas.  The iguanas, not native to Fla, "shut down" into a hibernation mode when the temp dips below 40.  Many have actually fallen out of trees onto the sidewalk. One man picked up several & put them in his car..unfortunately, once the iguanas "thawed out"...they jumped around his vehicle & almost caused him to crash.    Hey.....is that an iguana in yer hands...or are you just happy to see me?
