David Bowie Declared Best-Dressed Person in British History

David Bowie
It’s official: David Bowie is the best-dressed person in British history. That’s the determination of a poll conducted by BBC History Magazine. Bowie was one of 10 individuals nominated by leading academics and fashion experts in recognition of their impact on British fashion history. Bowie garnered 48.5 percent of the votes, far outdistancing such fellow nominees as Queen Elizabeth I and Beau Brummell.

Designer Wayne Hemingway, who nominated Bowie, told Historyextra.com, “Bowie has profoundly influenced so many of us. The first concert I went to on my own was David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane tour at King George’s Hall in Blackburn in 1973. After the gig, I went out and got my hair feathered [and] bought a tight-fitting canary yellow T-shirt from Clobber and Bowie's album from Ames Record Bar. Here was a creative genius who understood art and design, looked cool, inspired us and upset the establishment. All these attributes lead to things that drive humankind forward.”
