It started with the "Cat"

30 years in Sacramento radio. Long time. It got me thinking about my first day in town. It was April 14th, 1981. A Sunday. A man I never met, but who hired me to come out here and do radio, met me at the Airport. His name was Les Tracy. We had a bite at the Monterrey Canning company restaurant, got to know each other a bit, and he then took me to the station, KZAP- Sacramento's Rock Station. At that time it was on the 3rd floor of a dilapitated building that would be torn down within the year to make way for the huge Library going in. This was at the corner of 9th and J st. I loved these studios, it was like a 14 year old's room...posters, pictures, tons of LPs, a complete happy mess. The best part was the view from the studio. A panorama of J street and 'Gallo" park down below. I was lucky enough to land at a legendary station and the people I met there were some of the most talented in the biz. Tim Bedore went on to become a nationally recognized comedian, he cracked me up! John Russell had the great deep FM pipes that make radio so cool. The evening guys was a young kid with a parrot on his shoulder. Long hair, surfer kind of dude. His name was Curtiss Johnson and he left shortly after I got there. Today, he is my boss and has been for the last 10 years. As you can see, his career skyrocketed, mine, well, I do lunch. In the years to come, KZAP would send me around the world a couple of times, send me to cover some cool things in New York, and would allow me to throw out the first pitch at a Giants Dodgers game a couple of time. In days to come I will expand on some of these experiences. Other people who passed through KZAP while I was there included Bill Prescott, Pat Still, Tom Cale, The Godfather and Kevin Boom Boom Anderson. What a crew! We had some big fun my friend. And judging by the comments from people who heard the station, they had fun too. What a great start for my 30 year run. It started with the Cat.
