The old saying that you should never discuss politics or religion at parties still holds true. But those aren't the only topics that should be avoided.Social etiquette experts agree that these seven things will bring any party conversation to a screeching halt.
The recent changes in your child's nap schedule
The route you took to get here and the traffic you experienced
An excellent meal you once had at a restaurant
The latest additions to your wine cellar
An account of your last tennis game
The plot of a movie, play or book -- in particular, the funny parts
What do these subjects have in common? The listener has nothing to add. He or she must just hear you describe your experience. So stick to topics that let the other person talk as much as you -- and ask questions, don't just tell stories.
