Plug Pulled on Sir Paul/Boss Jam

Paul McCartneyIt seems not even an historic meeting of rock royalty is immune from that most troublesome of musician woes: the dreaded curfew. Sir Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen had the plug pulled on them at London’s Hyde Park in the interest of the public’s “health and safety.”

The incident happened at the Hard Rock Calling festival. Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello was also part of the cross-generational power cut, which occurred during a cover of “Twist and Shout.”

The Boss’s guitarist Steve Van Zandt of the E Street Band vented his frustrations on Twitter after the incident: “English cops may be the only individuals left on earth that wouldn’t want to hear one more from Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney,” he wrote, adding “On a Saturday night! Who were we disturbing?” and, “There’s no grudges to be held. Just feel bad for our great fans. ... It’s some City Council stupid rule.”

The following day, London Mayor Boris Johnson had this to say: “It sounds to me like an excessively efficacious decision. You won’t get that during the Olympics. If they’d have called me, my answer would have been for them to jam in the name of the Lord!”
