After a year of seeing all those exciting
British Invasion Bands take over America via the Ed Sullivan Show, ABC decided they needed a musical prescence on the air, and they presented us with one called Shindig!.It ran from September 1964 to January 1966. The host was an L.A. Dj. Jimmy O' Neill. He was kind of a jive guy, but most of the DJs back then were. Checking the schedule on this date, Sat (September 15th..1965). The Rolling Stones were the headliners. Why not, Satisfaction was on every radio station in the world practically. Also on the show were the Byrds doing "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better", The McCoys "Hang on Sloopy", and the Everly Brothers doing a couple of tunes. Not a bad line-up. The show was so successful that ABC started one of their own called "Hullabaloo". T.V. was discovering what we already knew, the new music is the soundtrack for our lives. Eventually the ratings for these kinds of shows started to go down and the networks were not shy about pulling the plug on them. Now we have music videos and all that on VH1 and MTV..but back then, this was the only way to see our favorite bands. You can still hear them every Saturday morning, right here on the Eagle.
