The Giants will announce this year’s recipient of the prestigious Willie Mac Award tonight, named for their Hall of Fame first baseman. The players vote for their choice as “most inspirational” and past honorees have included Matt Cain, Andres Torres and Ryan Vogelsong. Yeah, it’s a big honor. After coming back from a near career-ending injury, how can you not choose Buster Posey? Or how about Sergio Romo, who’s not only had a fantastic year in the bullpen, he’s always a cheerleader for the rest of the guys. Or maybe Angel Pagan, whose infusion of energy in the leadoff spot has been a huge catalyst in so many games. But do you know who I think would appreciate this honor the most? Barry Zito. Yup, the guy who watched his team enjoy their finest moment, and was kept off the roster two years ago. He never complained publicly, never threw anyone under the bus. And now, he’s won 13 games, and he’s enjoying his finest year in a Giants uniform. Yeah, the often vilified Barry Zito would be my darkhorse tonight.
