MOVIE REVIEW: Star Trek Into Darkness

Rules are made to be broken.  That’s one of the overriding themes of Star Trek Into Darkness, the latest prequel to the original Star Trek series, as the rebellious Captain Kirk leads the Enterprise on another interstellar adventure.  The film has plenty of Star Trek’s trademark sense of humor (including a number of great callbacks to the original TV show and movies) as well as some truly moving scenes.  The emotional aspect was a bit unexpected but actually added a lot to the story.  One really impressive aspect of both “Into Darkness” and the 2009 Star Trek film is how well the actors capture the essence of Kirk and Spock and the rest of the fabled characters, while still making them fresh and vital.  The plot was solid, the action fast-paced, the special effects were incredible (especially in 3D on the Esquire IMAX Theater screen).   Overall, “Star Trek Into Darkness” was one of the best moviegoing experiences I’ve had in ages. Set phasers on “awesome”!
